Yates Mountain
Climb to the lookout and earn sweeping views over Baldy and beyond
Service Description
Yates Mountain — also known as the Barrier Lake Fire Lookout — is a classic Kananaskis ridge hike offering panoramic views and a rewarding summit without technical terrain. This 12.5 km out-and-back trail gains approximately 550 metres in elevation, winding its way from the shores of Barrier Lake up through lodgepole pine forest, sun-exposed switchbacks, and open ridges. At the top, you’re treated to expansive views of Mount Baldy, the Kananaskis Valley, and Barrier Lake far below. The working fire lookout adds a unique touch to the summit experience, making it both scenic and meaningful. This is a great choice for hikers looking to explore beyond the beginner level, with sustained climbing, varied terrain, and an iconic Rocky Mountain reward at the top.
